June 19-21, 2013 - Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory | Meeting Website

"Big Data" was the overall theme of the 2013 National User Facility Organizational Annual meeting held at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and hosted by LBL's six user facilities: The Advanced Light Source, The Molecular Foundry, the Joint Genome Institute, the National Center for Electron Microscopy, ESNet and NERSC. Plenary sessions included talks on both technical and policy considerations of various aspects of big data: collection, analysis, maintenance/storage, and transmission. The opening session began with a review of NUFO activities during the past year and concluded with an initial presentation on a possible new structure for the organization.

Parallel sessions were held for meetings of the NUFO Working Groups: Administrative Affairs, Facility Financial Best Practices, Communication and Outreach, Industrial Access and Interactions, and Computing and Data Access. Summaries of these sessions were presented at the end of each day. The final session included an interactive video teleconference with Ben Brown, DOE office of Science, who discussed the DOE-SC definitions of User facilities and users.


June 18-20, 2012 - Los Alamos National Laboratory | Agenda/Talks/Participants

The meeting was focused on "Strengthening the Relationship Between University Research and National User Facilities". The two-and-a-half day meeting was held primarily in historic Santa Fe, New Mexico and included tours of some of LANL's National User Facilitiies: The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT), the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), and the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). Breakout sessions and working group topics included: University Relations, Industrial Access and Interactions, and Nanotechnology Security, to name a few.


June 27-29, 2011 - SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory | Meeting Website

The meeting was hosted by the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), and SLAC Particle Physics and Astrophysics (PPA). User Representatives, User Administrators, NUFO General Members and others interested in user facilities are invited to attend this meeting.


June 7-9, 2010 - Brookhaven National Laboratory | Agenda/Talks/Participants

Monday is devoted to administrative issues where User Administrators will discuss issues on metrics, user agreements, and surveys. This meeting is open to all members. Tuesday will kick-off with a keynote talk from the Office of Science followed by presentations from several speakers discussing long-range and opportunities for future lightsources, nuclear, and High Energy Science as well as what NUFO has undertaken and accomplished during the past year. Wednesday is devoted to a Special Symposium on Educational Outreach. The symposium will cover educational outreach from various perspectives, and includes invited talks from the National Science Foundation, DOE Office of Science Workforce Development, American Chemical Society, CERN, Adopt-a-Physicist Program, Physics Olympics, FIRST, MARIACHI, and other outreach efforts.


June 10-12, 2009 - Argonne National Laboratory

Day One of the three-day meeting focuses on users, user organizations, and the role they play in promoting science at national and international levels. Dr. Harriet Kung, Associate Director of Science for Basic Energy Sciences, DOE, will speak about the important role played by facility users in fostering our national science mission. Day Two looks at industrial use of our facilities and will include descriptions of best practices, barriers to partnering, and potential collaborative solutions. Day Three focuses more deeply on administrative issues, with sharing of best practices in a number of common areas.


April 24-25, 2008 - Pacific Northwest National Laboratory | Agenda/Talks/Participants

The 2008 National User Facility Organization (NUFO) meeting was held at the W.R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland Washington on Thursday and Friday April 24-25, 2008. Building upon the workshops held by the light source user administrators since 1990, this meeting was the fifth occasion for all user administrators and user organization chairs to meet and discuss issues of common interest to the community which utilizes these laboratories.

We are had a very interesting meeting with many great speakers. April 24 included presentations from Pedro Montano from the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the American Chemical Society, and the American Physical Society. In addition, Linda Horton, Director of the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (ORNL), discussed the nanoscience centers, and Dave Koppenaal, Chief Technology Officer of the EMSL, discussed integrative research.

On Friday April 25, talks and discussions focused on users and facility user administrator issues. Agenda items included user portal demos and benchmarking. The breakout groups last year were a big hit, so we provided meeting space for specific communities to meet Friday afternoon to discuss items unique to those facilities.

Building upon the workshops held since 1990 of the light source users' administrators, two successful workshops in 2003 at BNL and in 2005 at ORNL have been held to include user administrators and chairs of the user organizations of all the Department of Energy's laboratories for basic research. This year will be the 3rd occasion for user administrators and user organization chairs to meet and discuss issues of common interest to the community which utilizes these laboratories.

September 13, 2004 - Argonne National Laboratory

Agenda Topics: How each SR facility tracks numbers for the DOE facility report (I want to ensure that all of our definitions and assumptions are the same); Discuss how the facilities handle foreign access (FACTS) and safety (identifying hazards before users arrive, training, safety checklists, etc.); Discuss facility annual report process (do you ask all users to submit a progress report? who chooses which projects are featured in the book?).


October 27-28, 2003 - Brookhaven National Laboratory | Agenda/Talks

The meeting will serve as an information exchange and fact-finding mechanism to educate the User Facility Administrators and UEC Chairs on the policies for non-US citizen access into the US and the Foreign Visits & Assignments Program for national laboratories. Invited speakers will include individuals from the Department of State, Office of Technology Policy, Office of Security/Office of Science, and the American Physical Society. The RHIC & AGS Users’ Center and the RHIC & AGS Users’ Executive Committee are sponsoring this meeting.


October 21-22, 2002 - Los Alamos National Laboratory

Agenda Topics: Data collection/user program metrics changes (Special guest: Bob Astheimer, DOE/BES); Tying products to the use of the facility (publications, awards, etc. -- difficulties, solutions, consolidating efforts); Database consolidation (can we find a way to share common information?); Issue round-robin

The idea of the round robin is that we set aside about four hours on the agenda for this item, draw numbers, and make the rounds with each facility bringing up one issue that they would like ideas on. We would discuss for 15-20 minutes, and then move on to the next facility/issue. If a facility runs out of issues (you know, for you perfect user program managers out there), they can pass to the next facility in line. Discussions would include a quick verbal presentation of the issue or new idea and a freeform discussion of what others do or have been thinking about doing to improve, change, whatever.


April 5-6, 2001 - Argonne National Laboratory | Agenda/Participants

Our major meeting topic will be user statistics/user surveys. We’ll look at how statistics are collected and calculated at each of our facilities, what types of surveys are conducted, how the results are used, and how the DOE uses the information we collect and report. Bob Astheimer from the DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences, will be with us to explain both how the DOE/BES Scientific User Facilities reporting requirements were developed and how the DOE uses the information we provide throughout the year. However, since we have a number of new people who will be attending this meeting, I thought it might be useful to begin our meeting with a session in which we review user administration and support functions at each of our facilities. Not only will this provide some insights for our new colleagues, but it should also set the stage for one-on-one and roundtable discussions of topics that are of particular interest to individual facilities.

Agenda Topics: Tracking Users and Data: what is tracked, how is it tracked, what needs to be tracked, foreign visitor tracking (inc. sensitive countries), required reports, etc.; User Acitvity Reports: what is reported, how often, reporting venue (e-mail, web, hard copy, etc.); Users Groups: accounts, organization (bylaws, officers, dues, etc.), purpose, etc.; Visitor Residence Options: need, how it works, amenities, costs & pricing, user preferences, length of stay, transportation, competition, connectivity, etc.
